cut/paste : "When we refer to sand for use in an iAVs biofilter/sand bed, we mean inert silica (SiO2) sand"
    from here : http://iavs.info/sandponics/sand-selection-guide/
I recomend you read all the basic iavs info

Yes it is inert sand with size 0.7 - 1.1 mm.

If the sand is inert...free of silt and clay...and it drains well, then it will be suitable for iAVs. The size fraction range that you've stipulated will drain very well.

Indeed, because your stuff leans toward the coarse end of the sand size spectrum, it may drain too well - with the water disappearing into the sand. There is a variety of options for overcoming this temporary issue.

How big is your proposed sand biofilter?

I'm trying in an IBC tank like in the attached photo. Should be around 1 meter length * 1 meter width * 350 mm depth.
