  • The Urban Aquaponics Manual

The Urban Aquaponics Manual first saw the light of day in 2007 - the first publication of its type in the World.

I released the 2nd Edition in 2008...and, in 2010, I offered the 3rd Edition of the Manual - by subscription.

In 2012, I commenced work on the 4th Edition. .

I had already done a substantial amount of the work when, in 2014, I made the acquaintance of Dr Mark R McMurtry - inventor of the Integrated Aqua-Vegeculture System (iAVs) - the first successful ‘closed loop’ production of vegetables using the metabolic wastes of fish. In the ensuing couple of months, everything that I thought I knew about integrated aquaculture got turned on its head.

While, these days, I'm an unabashed advocate for iAVs, aquaponics now has a very substantial worldwide following...and the Urban Aquaponics Manual is, for me, unfinished business.

The good news is that I'll be finally rolling out the 4th Edition in the coming weeks. I plan to do it - one chapter at a time - on www.garydonaldson.net.

The Urban Aquaponics Manual has seen a number of firsts...it was the first book on Aquaponics in the world...and it was the subject of the first aquaponics' subscription site. And it's about to happen again. As each chapter appears, I'll be seeking inviting your input...comments, concerns, questions and ideas...in an attempt to ensure that the final work fully meets their needs of its readers.

    I
n the meantime, the 3rd Edition is still available online...at no cost...HERE.

I'll keep you posted on the 4th Edition developments.

    Regards....Gary

Are we to assume the new refined/revised edition will have substantial references to IAVs?

iAVs' relationship with aquaponics is such that I describe it as "an egg that can't be unscrambled"...so it's historical contect and its geneaology has to be acknowledged.

Mark's strident view, however, is that iAVs is not aquaponics. For that reason, iAVs only features in the Urban Aquaponics Manual to the extent that is necessary to honour its historical signficance...and to explain how what I refer to as "Aquaponics Biggest Mistake"...the basic flood and drain aquaponics system...came into being.

I feel that iAVs deserves its own book...and that will happen, too. The 4th Edition is 'unfinished business' and, like a whole bunch of things that I'm doing right now, it's about tidying up loose ends so that I can focus on more important things.

Understood. Reference to IAVs was intended as tongue-in-cheek. Bit difficult to express on writing.

I am a little curious, tho. No malice or hidden agenda intended - isn't it a but difficult to keep your thoughts and feelings about IAVs vs aquaponics separate and unbiased in your writings now that you've seen the light?

Your question is valid...and certainly no offense taken.

I've spent dozens of hours thinking about how to best approach The Urban Aquaponics Manual in a post-iAVs world...and I have several 4th Edition drafts that attempt to reconcile/integrated the two approaches...but that doesn't work for me.

I've decided that they are two different creatures and the only way that I can do justice to either is to give each one its own space.

In my view, the best way to deal with aquaponics is to focus on the facts:
          • It has uses. For me, that includes duckweed production and integration with soil-based gardening systems.
          • It has thousands of followers...many of whom are doing it the wrong way...and many others who could be doing it better.
          • iAVs is not for everyone. There are those who cannot source iAVs-suitable sand cost-effectively.
          • We live in a world where people act on their beliefs...some of which we'll never reconcile with iAVs. Some people approach aquaponics like the Ford/Chevy thing - devoid of rationale thinking.
          • The UAP Manual has a huge amount of my time invested in it.
I engaged in integrated aquaculture in all of its forms for ten years before my relationship with iAVs commenced. While I prefer iAVs, I know how aquaponics works and, if people are going to insist on using it, I can probably help them to do it properly.

I'd certainly value your opinion as to how well I'm managing my bias once the roll-out is underway.

Thanks for raising this question. It's something that I've grappled with for a long time and we're about to see how it plays out.

            Hi,

Just five years after I intended, the roll-out of the 4th Edition of The Urban Aquaponics Manual has commenced.

For those who might be interested...the Foreword...The Aquaponics Promise....and Aquaponics is Aquaculture...is now available for your reading pleasure.

As usual, it will cost you nothing...but I do have one small favour to ask of you. I'd like you...our esteemed members...to actively participate in the roll-out process.

My reasoning is that, with your help, I can provide a book that better meets the needs of its readers.

To that end, I invite you to provide your comments - or express your concerns - and offer ideas or suggestions for improvement. That can happen in the Comments section for each post...or I'm happy for you to discuss it here.

            Regards...Gary

hi Gary.. I am reading your blog since last month.I would like to make a RAS using the same method...But pumping costs are very higher when using submersible pumps... Can I use airlift pumps instead of a submersible pump in this design to cut down electricity cost...Airlift seems to be energy efficient and safer...is there any problem associated with airlift design... I think that would be great to use an airlift pump as the head to be lifted is 0 metre..(Gravity in --Airlift out)..and can I use this media instead of K1...As filter media

Hi Aswin....what's the link in your last post? It doesn't seem to point to anywhere useful...so can you remove it? I can do so from my end...but your post will be lost.

                        Pumping costs using water pumps may be higher than those of air lifts...in certain quite specific situations. You might like to consider the following;
                        • Air pumps are more expensive to purchase than water pumps of a comparable size.
                        • Water pumps are generally more reliable than water pumps...particularly those using a diaphragm. Piston air pumps are very noisy and get HOT...an indicator of lost energy.
                        • Water pumps offer much greater flexibility when it comes to placement of growing systems.
When you take everything into account, I'd be inclined to stick with water pumps.

Ok, my concern is to provide aeration, degassing and circulation from one unit....and can put the air pump inside my house leaving the airline outside...No electrical hazards will be there at fish tank area..and I have a 10 kpa air blower with me...Planning to utilise it for this purpose... will it work...? I would like to run my airlift at zero head... I heard that at zero head an airlift pump is more efficient than a water pump of same ratings...(And we get aeration for free of cost...) Not my opinion but what I heard from others.

I like airlifts for the same reasons that you've stated. My concerns are in the their practical application. Blowers move a lot of air but, like piston air pumps, they are noisy and they run hot...with the added concern that they struggle to deliver air much below a metre.

Your intention is to run your system at 0 head...and that's where an airlift will work best...but that raises the question of how you are going to plumb in the return from your plant growing systems....or is this unit purely for the production of fish?
